It is estimated that more than 11,000 people suffer injuries each year from shoveling snow. Many of these injuries are preventable with proper education and preparation. Below you'll find some basic tips to help keep you healthy.

  1. Warm up: Make sure to properly warm up your muscles before you brave the elements outside. Gentle dynamic stretches, jumping jacks, or any other activity to get the blood flowing can help prevent injury.

  2. Take Breaks. It is recommended to break your driveway into sections, especially if you have a large driveway. No need to finish it all in one pass. A quick 5 minute break can help you finish the job safely.

  3. Avoid excessive twisting. Try and lift the snow directly in front of you. Excessive twisting, when your body is not prepared for this, can lead to increased low back pain.

  4. Shovel small amounts with each scoop. Only shovel small amounts at a time. Especially when the snow is wet and heavy.

  5. Wear appropriate footwear. Winter boots with crampons make the ideal footwear for this task. Proper footing provides a solid base to work off and reduces fall risk. Crampons can be found online for an affordable price and are much cheaper than a broken bone!

  6. Stay Hydrated. You'll be surprised how much you sweat underneath your winter gear. Even though it is cold out, you should still drink plenty of water before, during, and after the project.

  7. Dress in layers. As you warm up you may need to lose some layers. Dressing in layers will help make sure you don't end up finishing the job drenched in sweat, which can cause rapid fluctuation in body temp when it's cold.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or comments regarding these tips. If the unfortunate injury does happen, we'll be happy to take care of you and get you back out there!
